Artist:
William Frater

This artwork is part of the VAS Collection

‘Jock’ Frater was a pioneer of Post Impressionism in Australia. In company with Arnold Shore and George Bell he is recognized as an important member of the modern movement in Victoria. Born in Scotland he migrated to Australia in 1910 where he enrolled in Victorian Artists Society’s life class. After a brief period back in Scotland he returned to Australia and in the next 25 years built a reputation as a craftsman and stained glass designer. His contribution to Australian art however was as a painter who introduced Post Impressionist principles and challenged the notion that art was an imitation of nature. Frater was a revered president of the VAS from 1963 until 1972, exhibiting annually with the Society during the last decade of his career and filling the 3 upstairs Galleries at his final exhibition in July 1973.
