Esther Paterson was born in Carlton the niece of prominent artist John Ford Paterson. She studied painting at the National Gallery School Melbourne from 1907-1912. Best known for her street scenes and landscapes she found further avenues for her talents in commercial art, book illustration and cartooning. Her portraits of uniformed officers and civilians were shown in the Australian War Memorial Canberra. Esther Paterson was a VAS Councillor (1954-68), a fellow (1949) of the Royal Society of Arts, London and President of the Melbourne Society of women painters and Sculptors (1966).
