Alan Moore, born in 1915, painter and teacher, became one of the Society’s oldest members still painting at his Avoca studio and visiting the VAS Gallery well into his nineties. Alan studied at the NGV School Melbourne and in Sydney under J S Watkins. He was an official war artist during WW2 and afterwards taught at Swinburne Technical College (now Swinburne University).
As a war artist he is best known for his images of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. The Australian War Memorial holds more than 200 of his works.
Towards the end of WW2 he recorded war scenes from PNG, the Middle East, Italy, England and Germany. Alan’s numerous awards include the 1942 Grace Joel Scholarship Prize and the 1946 Ferntree Gully Prize.
