Very active as a recorder, viol and violone player and over her varied career has toured extensively throughout Australia, New Zealand, Asia and Europe. She has a diverse discography of some 20 CD recordings which document Ruth’s musical life, spanning a musical timeframe from the 12th to the 21st century. Her most recent release was in February 2022, Capella Corelli duos (Move records)
Ruth has been a member of the baroque trio Capella Corelli since 1979 from its pioneering days, and, together with the medieval ensemble La Romanesca Ruth has been at the forefront of the emergence and popular acceptance of Early Music in Australia. Both these ensembles toured nationwide for Musica Viva bringing a fresh approach to early music performance practice to eager audiences. In more recent years Ruth has contributed to many of Australia’s fine early music ensembles notably Ludovico’s Band, the viol ensemble Consortium and the exciting new ensemble The Recorder Co-op. In 2022 she was invited to be soloist with the Melbourne based baroque orchestra Genesis Baroque performing Telemann’s Concerto for recorder in g minor and his Concerto for recorder and viola da gamba. With this ensemble she played the recorder obligatos in their recent highly acclaimed performance of Handel’s Acis and Galatea.
Ruth is in demand for teaching, workshops, and baroque orchestral playing. She has been a tutor for many years at the Orpheus Music workshops and in October she will be tutoring at the Recorder and Early Music Union’s annual weekend workshop In New Zealand.
As a teacher Ruth has nurtured many young recorder players many of whom have become professional players now their making the mark on the Australian and world scene. She has taught early music courses for many years at the University of Melbourne where at present she co directs the Medieval ensemble and tutors for the Baroque ensemble.
Ruth studied at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland with two inspiring teachers, Hans-Martin Linde and Jordi Savall.
