Max Sherlock was born in Victoria in 1925 and studied at the National Gallery School Melbourne with Max Meldrum (1941-42) and later privately with Clifton Pugh and Frank Werther (1958-60) Max served in the RAN during WW2. He won the VAS Cato prize in 1968 and was a finalist in the AGNSW Wynne Prize in 1973. His work is represented in regional galleries and private collections. Sherlock won the VAS Artist of the Year (AOTY) in 1974 and 1975 and served on the VAS Council between 1962 and 1978.
