Connie Stokes was born in the Wimmera district of Victoria in 1906. She attended the NGV School under Bernard Hall. Winning the National Gallery Travelling Scholarship she studied at the Royal Academy London from 1930 to 1933. Back in Melbourne under the artist and teacher George bell, Stokes became a leading painter in the modernist movement in Victoria. Connie joined the VAS in 1951 and is represented at the NGV as well as regional Australian galleries and the Universities of Melbourne and WA.
