Description

The Victorian Artists Society is thrilled to welcome Ensemble Creatus as Artists in Residence for 2025, continuing our proud history of excellence in classical music. This program features Australian dramatic contralto Liane Keegan and pianist Toni Lalich.

Ensemble Creatus join the Imprint program to present Portraits in Song, a captivating recital exploring the intersection of poetry and music. The theme of the portrait takes center stage, reflecting how the same face can be portrayed in vastly different ways by multiple artists—much like how the same poem can inspire a variety of musical interpretations.

In this unique performance, the selected poems will be read aloud before each "portrait" is revealed through song. The program includes diverse musical settings of 4 texts by composers such as Thomas Arne, Roger Quilter, Erich Korngold, and Arturo Buzzi-Peccia, offering a fascinating contrast in style and emotion. From Shakespeare's Under the Milkwood Tree to other carefully chosen poems, each piece provides a snapshot of time, feeling, and humanity, much like a portrait of a person.

This recital is an artistic exploration of the many faces of poetry and song—an unmissable experience for lovers of music and literature alike.

Attendees of Imprint Symposium are invited to stay for this event with no additional ticket required. Book on this page to attend the recital only.

Born in Australia, Liane received scholarships from the Opera Foundation Australia, Shell Royal Covent Garden Scholarship which enabled her to study at the National Opera Studio London.

Toni Lalich OAM has worked as an accompanist in Melbourne for the past 25 years, performing with professional singers and instrumentalists.
