Jimmy He is one of Australia’s prominent contemporary abstract expressionist painters. Before immigrating to Australia from Shanghai, China, in 1987, he worked as an art designer at the Shanghai Advertising Decoration Company. In Shanghai, he studied under Professor Chen Junde, a renowned Chinese oil painter and educator, who played a crucial role in shaping Jimmy’s personal and artistic development. Ding Liping, a graduate of the Shanghai Theatre Academy, was a creative director and senior art advisor at Shanghai Television. He, too, studied under Professor Chen Junde, whose guidance profoundly influenced his artistic journey.
This joint exhibition presents a dialogue between form and meaning, akin to the interplay of melody and rhythm. It explores the fusion of abstraction and freehand brushwork, showcasing a dynamic tension between visual structure and emotional expression. The artists transcend spatial limitations to evoke infinite imagination, creating a unique artistic language through fluid strokes and ethereal atmospheres.
Ding Liping crafts visual realms through the interplay of the tangible and intangible. His works merge Eastern and Western artistic traditions, resulting in compositions rich with lyrical rhythm and aesthetic elegance. Drawing on the Chinese painting concept of “ink rhythm and colour dance,” each element in his works occupies a deliberate position, resonating like a visual symphony.
In contrast, Jimmy He’s works exude spontaneity and emotional freedom. Vibrant colors, fluid lines, and seemingly random compositions convey a sense of rhythm amid chaos. His dynamic brushstrokes and bold palettes create an intense energy and emotional resonance.
Together, their artistic styles engage in a profound conversation between form and meaning. Like the rhythm and cadence of poetry, their works collide not as opposites but as complementary forces in a harmonious interplay. The interplay of form and meaning in their creations invites viewers to connect not only visually but also emotionally and intellectually, opening a unique inner world of visual and emotional resonance.
We would like to pay our respects to the traditional owners of the land on which our building stands, their leaders, past, present and emerging.
