Elizabeth Parsons was born in London in 1831 and emigrated with her young family to Australia in 1870. While living in London Elizabeth studied under Thomas Richardson and James Harding. She sketched and painted through southern England and Scotland and journeyed to Fontainebleau France. She exhibited her work in Melbourne soon after her arrival at Melbourne Public library. In 1874 Elizabeth Parsons was elected to the Council of the Victorian Academy of Art becoming its first female member.
