Cockatoo Island: A Proud History, established initially as a penal settlement, then as the volume of shipping increased in Sydney Harbour, a dry dock was commenced in 1847. It began a long history of building, refitting, and repairing ships. Wartime demands were great with naval ships being built, plus the refitting of merchant ships, and luxury liners were converted to troop carriers, stores, and hospital ships. I have painted Cockatoo Island in this wartime period.
