While painting a few days earlier I noticed this scene unfolding behind me. Only the moon was higher in the sky. So I returned to paint the rising full moon. The painting evolved in two parts. I first painted the suns last rays and shadows, then, when the moon became visible I painted the sky. I didn't really see the finished painting until the next day as I packed up in the dark.
