Annie is a Ballarat-born tonal realist painter based in regional Victoria. Her work is concerned with capturing light and depth through the correct placement of tones, seeking to represent her visual experience as accurately as possible on a two-dimensional surface.
She has been painting since mid-2023, undertaking regular classes at the Victorian Artists Society. Working directly from life, and informed by the tonal realist tradition of Max Meldrum, her practice is grounded in sustained observation and the careful comparison of tone to resolve form and space. Through this process, she seeks to develop her visual knowledge, accepting the limitations of paint while striving to capture the truth as it appears. Each painting acts as both a visual study and progression toward greater perceptual understanding.
Alongside still life and portraiture, she works en plein air, drawing on the rural landscape surrounding her home as a consistent subject.
