Having previously explored the figure of the woman in red in my own work, I was fascinated to discover Tom Roberts' La Favorita (1889), painted on a cigar box lid for the original 9 by 5 Exhibition. The coincidence of subject matter and format inspired this work, which reimagines the theme from a contemporary perspective while acknowledging the history of the original 9 by 5 Exhibition.
