This masterclass introduces a practical method for tonal realism inspired by Australian Tonalism. Working from direct observation, participants will explore a structured approach to oil painting that places tonal relationships at the foundation of the image. The approach draws on ideas associated with the teaching of Max Meldrum, where careful observation of tonal relationships forms the basis of the painting process.
Participants will develop methods for measuring and plotting, observing tonal shapes, and establishing a hierarchy of edges, while also exploring colour temperature and its application according to tonal order.
By the end of the masterclass, participants will have developed insight into a logical and practical framework for tonal oil painting that can support further study and independent work.
Presented as part of Imprint: What Remains, this workshop complements T. J. Murphy's exhibition Remains to be Seen.
