Winner of the 2021 VAS Maritime Exhibition and Thomas Somerscales Trophy
Julian Bruere is a watercolourist who draws on a variety of themes, with an attention to landscapes, alpine snow gums, city scenes, maritime themes, figure and portraiture.

The winner of the 2021 VAS Maritime Exhibition and the Thomas Somerscales Trophy was Julian Bruere for his watercolour titled 'Le Vengeur sinks, 1794.'

Congratulations to the winning artists and all Victorian Artists Society member artists who participated in the VAS Maritime Exhibition for 2021.
The Judge for the VAS Maritime Exhibition was Craig Penny.
Born in Mildura, Craig has shown an interest in art and drawing from a very young age and has created a successful career as a professional artist. Studying art at Ballarat University, painting and graphic design claimed most of his attention allowing him to pursued a successful career in illustrator as a member of the Illustrators Association of Australia for many years.
Craig has skills in a range of mediums including computer graphics. He taught both traditional drawing, illustration and digital drawing at both Victoria University and Swinburne University.
Craig never lost his love of using traditional methods and now specialises in watercolour, acrylic painting and illustration. In 2001, Craig had his first major solo exhibition in Mt Eliza, Victoria. There have been many exhibitions and awards since. Craig's work has been accepted by Galleries around Australia, Singapore, SE Asia and California, USA as well a many private collections and is in strong demand today.
