SONGTELLERS is an intimate, tavern-style concert that celebrates the musical story-telling cultures of the Western Balkans, focusing on two little-known genres—Sevdah from Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as, the Sephardic Jewish Romances (secular female songs.)
Sevdah, often described as 'the Balkan Blues or the Balkan Fado' is a little known vocal form native to Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is the song of longing and the voice of that which is deemed 'impossible to describe' outside of the realm of music. Sevdah explores a wide variety of topics: from romantic longing, through to expression of spiritual enlightenment and social commentary. Its close relative, Sephardic Romance, is a song shared at home, predominantly among the female members of the family, covering a wide range of topics that included female solidarity, connection to culture, marriage and life in diaspora.
Ensemble SARAY Iluminado creatively interrogates these genres with imagination, humour and deft musicianship. Allow yourselves to be transported to the translucent waters of the Adriatic coast and the green forests of North-Eastern Bosnia, where the ghosts of folk-songs roam the world and tell us of singing fruits, enchanted seas and mythical creatures never to be forgotten.
Performers include: Nela Trifkovic, Irine Vela, Kelly Dowall, Ernie Gruner and special guests.
We would like to pay our respects to the traditional owners of the land on which our building stands, their leaders, past, present and emerging.
