Paul Laspagis is a Melbourne artist who works from the natural landscape in the outer eastern suburbs.
He sees painting and drawing as tools with which to explore and to become conscious of the subliminal order underlying the visual world and endeavours to give it a voice through a contemporary aesthetic language that he has evolved over the years.
Within the dynamics of painting, his aim is to create a parallel reality that express the values of order, harmony and permanence which he sees in the seeming randomness of the landscape.
The exterior landscape and the interior life of the artist meet on the canvas.
Paul was born in Greece and studied at the Victorian National Gallery School from 1968 to 1971.
Since then, he has been totally committed to his vocation and has had many solo exhibitions.
He has been a VAS member for twenty-five years and sees it as vitally important to the future of the visual arts in the community provided it can present work that is challenging and is relevant to the modern audience.
