Description

In this 2 day Masterclass Workshop, Lisa will guide participants through painting a portrait from photo references.

The goal is to find the balance of soft and hard edges, achieve great tonal value contrast, and deliver great emotion in your portrait painting. We are not just repeating and copying a photograph, but put in mood and life in our works.

Day 1-

First stage, Lisa will be using single colour to demonstrate the drawing stage, then block out in bold strokes showing tonal contrast.

Second stage, Lisa will be using big flat head brush paint in thin layer, from dark to light establish the colour patterns of the portrait with loose brush strokes.

Day 2-

Third stage, getting much thicker paints with brush works and introducing texture and details.

Fourth stage, bring the painting together with some refined details.

During the workshop, Lisa will be demonstrating a step by step an oil painting of Robert Wade’s portrait from some photo references taken in recent years, to pay tribute to the Godfather of Australian Watercolour, who sadly passed away earlier this year.

Participants have the choice of what they prefer to paint. You can follow Lisa's same image which will be easier to learn from. Alternatively, you are also welcome to bring your own portrait image with good light and shadows and clear resolution.

This masterclass will predominately be held in our upstairs galleries alongside our 2024 VAS Portraiture Exhibition. Observers are welcome!

Acknowledgment of traditional owners.

We would like to pay our respects to the traditional owners of the land on which our building stands, their leaders, past, present and emerging.
